Mogo the Mynah

Poe's The Raven has always been one of my favorite poems. And so when I got a raven black mynah bird, who could talk, I thought it would be fun to teach him "Nevermore." And he thought so too. "Nevermore" in high falsetto tones and low gravelly ones filled our house.

In my children’s book about him Mogo gets into a lot of trouble with his mischievous "Nevermore." But then something happens that makes Mogo a hero because he says "Nevermore" at the right moment.

“If I hear one more ‘Nevermore’
    I’ll scream,”
        said Nello’s mother.

“If I hear one more ‘Nevermore’
    I’ll swear,”
        said Nello’s father.

And just then the baby
    Said her first word ―

“NEVERMORE!”

This is the end,”
    said Nello’s mother.

    “The end indeed!”
said his father.
“That bird will not whistle or tootle-dee-doo,
say hello, good-by, or how are you?
So tomorrow he goes without further ado.”
